Green River - Photos By: Louis Cahill
As I talked about earlier in my past posts we floated the Green River the first two days of fishing. Because the Snake River was still really high from run off many of the outfitters were choosing to float the Green River for their guide trips. Knowing this we got up extra early dropping the boat in at 5:45am in the morning to ensure we were the first anglers down the river for the day. We really feel it paid off to get on the water early, despite the first couple of hours of the day fishing slow.

Mornings were cool and we hoped for good dry fly fishing starting out in the morning’s but we quickly found out the best technique to hook into good fish was to throw streamers to the banks. We caught some really good trout stripping streamers in the early morning hours and around 11am each day it was like someone switched on a light switch and the fish started rising. It was then that we found throwing Grey Drakes, Pale Morning Duns, and Yellow Sally imitations was the ticket to consistently having our flies sipped in off the surface.

We all took turns rowing the boat and fishing for the long, twenty mile float. The best part of it all was having the river to ourselves. This long section of river we floated is notorious for heavy winds after lunch, but this trip the stars aligned and we were blessed with mild winds both days. We had to dodge a few serious storms those two days of fishing, which at times called for mega rowing, but our early morning put-ins allowed us to make it to the take out just prior to the serious lightning and downpours. Many guides use a kicker motor for this stretch of river, which I highly recommend if you have one on hand. We didn’t of course and made the float like they did in the old days.

Some times you have to make the call to stow the rods, and row out to ensure you fish another day.
In summary, the Green River treated us very well those two days of floating and we not only caught some bruisers, but we slayed them during the day when the fish were rising. We didn’t fish our big gaudy dry flies like we did last year, but we did get to experience some pretty awesome hatches and we matched the hatch. It was a complete blast fishing with my buds, and I’ll never forget those pretty trout and the great camaraderie.
We beat the storm and enjoyed some cold bricks for the drive back. (Brad Wayne is so the MAN!!)
We’ll continue posting on our third day of the trip tomorrow. And boy do we have some awesome photos to share with everyone. We hope you check them out give us some feedback.
